M550i is essentially a standard 5 series with a 4.4L V8 (turbocharged) and normal X-Drive (which means essentially rear drive bias, but power can be sent to the front wheels) compared to the M5, the x-drive can't be turned off. In an M5, the front axle can be disengaged, making the M5 rear wheel drive, allowing pure drifting to occur.

Pressing the adaptive switch is not making the car switching between sport, comfort and eco. There are a couple of features allready explained in this thread that are altered in adaptive mode. My car drives fine in adaptive and very different from eco or sport mode. It is however not so easy to make a claim about the differences with comfort mode.

My 550 has 4 modes (comfort+, comfort, sport and sport+) whereas the M5 has 3 modes (comfort, sport and sport+). The names may be similar between the two cars, but the actual functionality of the modes is very different. For example - comfort is listed on both cars but the comfort mode on the M5 is somewhere closer to sport on the 550.
